1. Title, extent and commencem ent.
(1)This Act may be called the Prisons Act, 1894.
3[(2) It extends to the whole of India except 4[the territories which, immediately before the 1st
November, 1956, were comprised in Part B States] . ]” (3)It shall come into force on the first day of July, 1894. (4)Nothing in this Act shall apply to civil jails in the 5[State] of Bombay 6[as it existed
immediately before the 1st November, 1956] outside the city of Bombay, and those jails shall continue
to be administered under the provisions of sectio ns 9 and 16 (both inclusive) of 7Bom bay Act 2 of
1874, as amended by subsequent enactments.
